RallyRACC Catalunya

Sébastien Loeb (on the right) and Daniel Elena...Image via Wikipedia

The Citroën Total World Rally Team's flag-to-flag domination of this weekend's RallyRACC Catalunya was rewarded by the outfit's third one-two finish of the season. Thanks to their sixth win of the year, Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena have succeeded in closing to within a single point of Mikko Hirvonen in the 2009 Drivers' standings, while second place for Dani Sordo and Marc Marti handed Citroën sufficient points to wrap up the firm's fifth Manufacturers' world crown. The outcome of the Drivers' title chase will be settled on Rally GB (October 23-25).

Sébastien Loeb and Dani Sordo ended Saturday's action split by just 1.5 seconds and in a strong position to fulfil the mission they had been given by Olivier Quesnel before the start. Before any celebrations could begin, however, they still had two attempts at today's loop of three-stages west of Salou to tackle, and neither driver had any intention of easing up out of a desire to stay one hundred per cent focused, savour today's six tests and entertain the huge crowds which lined the stages.

Indeed, Dani Sordo kicked off the last day with the best time on SS13 (Riudecanyes). It was then Sébastien Loeb's turn to top the timesheet on the short La Serra d’Almos test (SS15) which enabled the five-time World Champion to return to the day's first service area in Salou with a cushion of 2.3 seconds at the top of the leaderboard: "I've above all been concentrating on not cutting the corners so as to reduce the risk of puncturing. There's no point in trying to gain a few tenths of a second when there's not really any need. I will be just as cautions this afternoon, too, because the stages will probably be quite soiled second time round…"

PSA Peugeot Citroën applies eco-design principles to its vehicles: 20% of “green” material content by 2011

== Summary == Universal recycling symbol outli...Image via Wikipedia

The Group has set an ambitious target in eco-design: to include 20% of green materials in the polymers used to build its cars by 2011. A car is made up of 70% metal, already largely recycled, 5% miscellaneous materials (glass, etc.) and 5% fluids. The rest is plastics (polymers).

The term “green materials” covers natural fibres such as linen and hemp, non-metallic recycled materials and biomaterials, which are produced using renewable resources rather than petrochemicals. The aim is to use fewer fossil fuel plastics and to increase the use of raw materials from renewable sources to make parts lighter, in some cases, to cut CO2 emissions from plastics production and to promote plastics recycling.

The Earth’s resources are dwindling, so it is important to optimise the way in which they are used. End-of-life processing is therefore factored in from the design stage. The aim is to boost recyclability and thus reduce the potential impact of end-of-life vehicles. As a minimum, 85% of a vehicles weight can be reused or recycled, and a further 10% can be used for energy recovery.

The key feature of the action plan set up by PSA Peugeot Citroën in 2008 is that it concerns all Group vehicles and the three families of green materials. The green material content of each vehicle project must be increased. This approach also involves existing vehicles, with green materials being integrated during their production life. Engineering teams are working in close cooperation with suppliers in order to utilise these new materials.

This effort also gives new impetus to the recycled materials industry. The subject of biomaterials is still at the research stage in the automotive industry. To address the issue, scientific partnerships have been set up as part of research groups bringing together public laboratories, chemical firms and parts suppliers. The aim of these partnerships is to accelerate the application of these materials in the automotive industry.

Rally Finland - The championship starts in Finland !

Sébastien Loeb (on the right) and Daniel Elena...Image via Wikipedia

Sébastien Loeb, who will begin Rally Finland with a one-point deficit compare with Mikko Hirvonen, believes that the Drivers' World Rally Championship will really start in Jyväskylä! The five-time World Champion and his co-driver Daniel Elena will be hoping to repeat their memorable victory of 2008 as they attempt to regain the upper hand in the series. Meanwhile, Citroën Total World Rally Team continues to enjoy a handsome cushion at the top of the Manufacturers' standings, while Dani Sordo and Marc Marti are targeting a podium finish in Finland, a terrain on which they feel increasingly at ease.

The high-speed stages, spectacular jumps and concealed corners of the former 1000 Lakes Rally are a unique challenge for any driver, and more especially so for those who weren't raised in Finland! This round has counted towards the World Championship 33 times, yet only three non-Nordics have succeeded in popping the champagne in Jyväskylä in that time, namely Carlos Sainz, Didier Auriol and … Sébastien Loeb who took the top prize last year after a thrilling duel with Mikko Hirvonen.

Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena would obviously like to repeat that achievement on their main rival's home turf. "It would clearly be more comfortable if we had a lead of, say, 20 points going into this rally. That said, we were only three points clear of Mikko before last year's visit," recalls Seb. "This time, the gap is even narrower, and there are only four more rallies to come this season. As I see it, it's as though the championship will be beginning afresh in Finland, and our only option will be to attack."

Senior employees will be particularly involved in mentoring and sponsoring the students and interns, to foster the transmission of skills and facilitate orientation. A meeting has been scheduled with employee representatives to discuss this topic.

The programme also includes a significant number of measures targeted to young people with few or no qualifications. These individuals will be offered the opportunity to learn how to operate industrial systems, with a minimum of 150 hours of training during the year, of which 70 hours devoted to Lean Manufacturing. The new 207

Peugeot S.A.Image via Wikipedia

With its three body shapes, each bursting with appeal, the 207 moved into the pole position in the European small car market in 2007 and then remained there in 2008 with sales of 423,700 units.

However, in the summer of this year, the 207 will become even more visually appealing due to the introduction of a number of new features, allowing it to:
- win new admirers with a more distinctive elegance but still maintaining a personality full of dynamism.

- attract previous and existing owners (1,460,000 207s were produced to the end of April 2009) who, once or even twice before, will have approved of its innovative profile and original styling which are well above average for the segment

in day-to-day use to continue to win the hearts of its customers through its charm, its blend of comfort and driveability, its low running costs and high levels of standard equipment.

With the new 207, Peugeot, the European leader in the B2 segment in 2008, once again demonstrates its small car expertise. By the end of the first half of 2009 Peugeot will have completely modernised all its vehicles in this segment.

The 107, the ideal urban car in the B1 segment, compact and easy to drive, was given a new design at the front in January 2009 that added a touch of class to its young and trendy image.

In March 2009, the 206+ was introduced to continue the 206 legend with a new goal: that of a versatile entry level vehicle in the B2 segment with proven qualities and a refreshingly modern design featuring all the current Peugeot styling cues.

Mechanical Compact Gearbox Production Unit Extended - 30 Millionth Gearbox Produced

Roland Vardanega, Member of the Managing Board and Executive Vice President, Manufacturing and Components of PSA Peugeot Citroën, today inaugurated the extension of the mechanical compact gearbox production unit at the Valenciennes plant in France’s Nord Pas de Calais region.

The ceremony, which was attended by local and regional officials, also provided a opportunity to celebrate the manufacture of the 30 millionth gearbox produced at the Valenciennes site since its opening in 1981.

The extension adds 7,000 square meters to the production unit, which already comprised some 42,000 square meters of existing buildings. Requiring an investment of €83 million, the extension integrates PSA Production System* (SPP) technology that makes the site more efficient and competitive. When it becomes operational in February 2010, production capacity will increase from 1,750 to 2,625 units a day.

Specialised in the manufacture of gearboxes, the Valenciennes plant currently employs 2,250 people. Four types of gearbox are produced on the site, two of which were launched within the past three years:

- The five-speed manually operated BE gearbox launched in 1981
- The AL4 automatic gearbox introduced in 1997
- The six-speed MCP automated gearbox introduced in 2006, which reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 3% to 5% thanks to optimised electronic control of the clutch and gear shifting
- The mechanical compact manual gearbox launched in late 2007 and derived from the MCP gearbox. It also helps to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 5% depending on adaptations.

The Valenciennes plant is a global benchmark in the manufacture of gearboxes. With 1.5 million units produced in 2008, it ranks third worldwide.

Renault prolongs Clio Campus production at Flins

2005 Renault ClioImage via Wikipedia

Renault is prolonging Clio Campus production at Flins through December 2009, rather than October 2009 as initially planned. This decision was made because Clio Campus sales are higher than expected, thanks to the scrapping bonuses introduced across Europe. The assignment of the 300 people from other Renault plants seconded to Flins for this project will thus be extended to end-2009.

A new engine that combines maximum driving pleasure with lower fuel consumption & lower CO2 emissions

With the arrival of the new V6 DPFS 240 engine, the Citroen C5 & C6 offer a « win-win » situation. C5 & C6 DPFS 240 herald a new dawn in terms of customer satisfaction, with the promise of pleasure, quiet operation and good performance. The improvements offer a significant reduction in fuel consumption and reduce CO2 emissions by between12 and 15%.The most powerful Diesel in the history of the Marque gives the two saloons in the range qualities which further strengthen its universally recognised appeal.

To achieve this level, the V6 Diesel engine has evolved significantly. Its capacity increases to 3 litres and it has benefitted from several improvements : a new 3rd generation direct common-rail injection system ; new generation combustion chambers, turboparge ensured by a system with 2 turbocompressors of variable geometry, exhaust gas recirculation and a system which recovers energy during deceleration.

PSA Peugeot Citroën Wins Prestigious International Engine of the Year Award for Third Year in a Row

The International Engine of the Year award in the 1.4-litre to 1.8-litre category was once again won by the 1.6-litre, four-cylinder direct injection turbo petrol engine designed by PSA Peugeot Citroën in cooperation with BMW Group.
Introduced in 2007 on the Peugeot 207, the 175-hp version of the engine also equips the Peugeot 308 THP 175. It is part of a full range of 1.4-litre to 1.6-litre engines that deliver from 95 to 175 hp and up to nearly 200 hp on certain models.
Equipped with the latest technological features, including direct injection for the turbo engine, variable valve timing for the naturally aspirated engine, a volume flow-controlled oil pump and an on-demand water pump, the family improves fuel efficiency and reduces emissions by around 10% compared with the previous generation.
Engines in the 1.4-litre to 1.6-litre category currently equip more than 12 Peugeot and Citroën models, including the Peugeot 207 sedan, 207 CC, 207 SW, 308 sedan, 308CC, 308 SW and 3008, and the Citroën C3 Picasso, C4 sedan and C4 coupé, C4 Picasso and C4 Grand Picasso.

3008 : BMP6 (6-speed sequential gearbox) and a new 2.0 l HDi FAP engine

TWO ADDITIONS TO THE MODEL RANGE COMBINING DRIVING PLEASURE AND RESPECT FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

At the crossroads of several types of vehicles (SUV, people-carrier, hatch, etc.), the 3008 contributes some original and innovative solutions to the compact vehicle segment.
So, with its technological content and the expertise on which it is based, this crossover endeavours to represent a new concept mixing modernity, value, multi-purpose use, driving pleasure and "off-road" drive… all while respecting the environment to the maximum.
As a responsible vehicle, the 3008 model range now starts with 130 g/km of CO2 (4.9 l/100 km for a combined cycle), with the introduction of the six speed sequential gearbox (BMP6) coupled with the 1.6 l HDi FAP 80 kW engine (110 bhp).
This moderate level, which is still rare for the volume car market also allows it to take advantage of a 200 euro bonus in France.
The 3008 therefore links environmental targets with driving pleasure, achieved here by automating the gear changes.
Further proof of this combination of driving pleasure and ecological responsibility can be found on another level of the model range; the 3008 receives a new 2.0 l HDi FAP engine. This engine now complies with the Euro 5 emissions standards and has been successful in controlling its fuel consumption (5.6 l/100 km combined cycle, which is 146 g/km de CO2) and all this is achieved while displaying top levels of performance.
In fact, this engine (the "DW10D") delivers a maximum torque of 340 Nm at 2 000 rpm and a maximum power output delivering 110 kW (150 bhp) at 3 750 rpm, when it is linked, as it is here, to a manual six speed gearbox.

5008, the new people carrier

Peugeot S.A.Image via Wikipedia

With the 5008, Peugeot has created a new interpretation of the compact people carrier. This new model combines all the manufacturer’s key values but also builds further on the benefits expected by customers in this segment without any adverse effect on the vehicle’s road holding. The 5008 also introduces a range of cutting edge technologies to further enhance comfort, convenience and driving safety.

As a result, the 5008 aims to set new benchmarks in the market for compact people carriers.

Peugeot expands its market coverage in the M1 segment

The 5008, after the 3008 crossover, is Peugeot’s second new product offering in the large M1 vehicle segment.

This compact five to seven seater people carrier offers a number of significant benefits that will enhance and strengthen Peugeot’s presence in the family car market.

After the 308 SW and the recent 3008 crossover, the 5008, with a length of 4.53 m and a height of 1.64 m, is a natural extension to Peugeot’s current offerings in the M1 segment.

An aerodynamic and elegantly styled people carrier

In terms of exterior style, the 5008 stands out with its balanced and particularly distinctive profile.
Its aerodynamic styling (Cx of 0.29 and Scx of 0.77) is akin to that of the TGV high-speed train. It evokes fluidity and driveability of the very highest order.

The front of the car with its attractive profiled headlamps, steeply plunging bonnet which extends backwards towards the large front windscreen which is level with the front wheels, seems to be designed to penetrate through the air in the most efficient way.

The natural fluidity emanating from the 5008 is further enhanced by the chrome detailing decorating the front grille that gives the car an elegant and luxurious appeal.

The design of the vehicle’s sides both pure and smooth, create an impression of movement, while the high waist line inspires safety.
